About this Camp: The Kilkenny Chess Camp for kids aged 7-16 years (up to and including TY) is a 3-day summer camp that involves expert chess coaching by IM Mark Quinn, introductions to exciting attacking openings and the analysis of students’ games. Each day is rounded off with a fun daily tournament with prizes. This campis open to kids who already know the basic rules of the game and aims to help Experienced Beginners and Intermediate Strength Players to get their game to the next level. As a bonus, every child that enrolls in a Chess Bud Summer Camp will receive an account in Mark’s online coaching portal from the 1st of June till the 31st August: i) Participate in the Weekly Chess Bud Thursday Night Tournament. ii) Work on your endgame using the Playable Annotated Endings Database. iii) Discover exciting new opening ideas in the Playable Annotated Games Database. iv) Solve puzzles and complete assignments. v) Play friendly challenge games with your friends in the Game Area anytime! Note: Mark will be using the games from the online portal tournaments in June/ July to design each day’s curriculum so the material covered has a direct relevance to the kids enrolled in that day’s camp. Camp Details: Venue: Kilkenny Rugby Club, Waterford Rd, Foulkstown, Co. Kilkenny Camp Duration: 3 days Camp Times: 9.30am – 3.30pm daily Camp Dates: Mon 17th – Wed 19th July 2023 Daily Camp Fees: €35/€55/€70 per 1/2/3 siblings Kids can enrol for one day, two days or all three. Just fill out the Kilkenny Chess Camp form and select the days using the dropdown menu! In addition to having a superb pitch to have a kick-around on during the breaks, there will be a permanent food/coffee station selling minerals and snacks at Kilkenny Rugby Club during July and August – so you heard it here first 🙂 – This camp is for kids aged 7-16 years i.e. up to and including TY students The Coach: Daily Schedule: 9.30am-10am (drop off and friendly games/ chance to solve fantastic chess puzzles on the big board) 10-10.45am: Lesson followed by kids playing out middlegame and/or endgame positions against each other) 10.45-11am: Break 11.00 – 11.50am: Lesson involving explanation of a specific opening variation followed by practice games in that variation. 11.50am – 12.00pm: Mini-Break 12.00pm – 12.30pm Analysis of student games. 12.30-13.00pm – Round 1 of the daily tournament + game analysis 13.00-14.00pm: Lunch & outdoor activities, i.e. football weather permitting. 14.00-14.30 pm: Round 2 of the daily tournament + game analysis 14.30- 15.00pm: Round 3 of the daily tournament analysis plus game analysis 15.00-15.30pm: Prizegiving followed by friendly Games and Collection Camp Rules: i) An early drop off 9.30am is possible at no extra charge – students will play friendly games or solve puzzles under supervision. ii) Please provide your child with a packed lunch and juices or bottles of water. iii) Please do not include fizzy drinks, chewing gum, popcorn, nut or nut-containing products. iv) Weather-permitting, there will be outdoor activities such as football at lunchtime so please make sure your child has appropriate clothing and footwear. v) Kids are allowed to bring mobile phones to the camp but they must be placed in a designated safe-box on arrival. Phones will be returned at the end of the day. There is a wide age-range at Chess Bud Camps so this measure is designed to prevent any children from inadvertently showing age-inappropriate content to other children. Mark’s phone is always turned on so if a parent needs to contact their child urgently, they can message or ring him. vi) Some photographs and short videos may be taken at camp for promotional videos. – Maximum 60 kids per day. If the camp number exceed 34 students, Mark will bring another garda-vetted coach to assist.
– This camp will run with a minimum of 20 students. Should that quota not be reached all monies will be reimbursed asap.
IM Mark Quinn is a highly experienced garda-vetted chess coach who has represented Ireland at multiple Chess Olympiads. Mark received his International Master Title at the Istanbul Chess Olympiad in 2000.
