ABOUT THIS SEMINAR SERIES

Practical play and analysis will be the order of the day on this course.  Each Week students will be given a workbook with thematic puzzles to solve and tricky middlegame challenges to mull over.    For the duration of the seminar series, students will have access to the Chess Bud Learning Portal where they will be able to play through solutions to the workbook puzzles and learn and review essential move-orders in the lines covered on the course.

Continuous Enrolment…

Each of the Seminars is a stand-alone seminar which means you don’t need to have attended weeks 1 & 2 to follow week 3 for example.  Students who do attend all of the seminars will be equipped with (near) complete repertoires in the respective Opening Variations covered in each course.

Students who sign up don’t need to know opening theory or be experts in the lines covered in the Seminar Series.  It’s my job to give them the overview and teach them how to play the French, English and King’s Indian!

Players seeking to defeat opponents employing these openings may also benefit from attending one or more of the seminars, so as they can gain a deeper understanding of these dynamic counter-attacking closed and semi-closed variations, where positional understanding and strategic thinking initially takes precedence over tactical play.  In theory, a player could form a complete new opening repertoire with white and black from these three courses.  That at least is the idea!

Please note that this online summer program is however only suitable for students who have mastered the fundamentals of the game (including castling, en passant etc.) and who play regularly above 1000 Elo on chess.com or lichess.

Students will have ample opportunities to play friendly matches against other students over the five weeks of the course and students who already play one or more of these openings are invited to create a study of their French, English or King’s Indian Games in lichess which I will review before or during the course.

If you are wondering whether your son or daughter is of a sufficient standard to take part in this course, email me at mark@chessbud.ie and let me know their handle on either lichess or chess.com and I will review ten or so of their games and let you know if this is the right class for them.
